Cambridge Is Three Cities. Each Basement Is Different.
Cambridge was stitched together in 1973 from three separate towns — Galt, Preston, and Hespeler. Fifty years on, the housing stock in each district still reflects its own history, and that shows up in the basement.
Galt— old limestone and brick homes, some dating to the 1850s cotton mill era. Fieldstone foundations, ceilings often 6'0"–6'4", and small existing windows. Downtown Galt sits in a Heritage Conservation District — exterior egress cuts need heritage review. A Galt basement conversion is usually the highest-effort, highest-reward project in the city.
Preston— post-war and 1960s bungalows dominate. Poured concrete foundations, ceilings usually 7'0" or better, and often a bathroom rough-in already stubbed. The easiest place in Cambridge to build a legal suite.
Hespeler— mix of Victorian mill workers' cottages and 1990s+ subdivisions in Hespeler Village. The old part has similar constraints to Galt. The new part is ready-to-finish out of the box.

Old Homes, Modern Suites
Making a 130-Year-Old Basement Legal
An 1890s Galt millworker's cottage was built with a root cellar, not a bedroom. Turning it into a legal 2026 secondary suite is possible — it just takes more work than a new build. Here's the honest scope:
Ceiling height under 6'5"
Options: lower the slab (adds $15K–$30K, permanent fix), raise bulkheads to expose more joist bay, or reconfigure so low areas become mechanical/storage instead of habitable rooms.
Common in: Galt, Old Hespeler, Preston pre-1950s
Fieldstone or early brick foundation
Interior wall assembly gets a moisture barrier, rigid foam against the stone, then framing pulled off the foundation with a small air gap. Waterproofing may need attention before finishing.
Common in: Downtown Galt, Downtown Hespeler
Existing windows too small for egress
Cut new egress window through poured or stone foundation. In heritage districts, requires heritage permit and specific window styling. Cost: $3,500–$6,500 per window.
Common in: All older Cambridge districts
Single-panel electrical service
Older Cambridge homes often have 60A or 100A service — legal secondary suite needs 200A minimum plus a sub-panel for the unit. Utility upgrade adds $2K–$4K.
Common in: Homes pre-1965 across all districts
Cambridge Basement Renovation Cost (2026)
Same ranges as the rest of Waterloo Region, but Cambridge's older housing stock pushes older-home projects toward the top of each range.
Basic Finish
$35K–$55K
Rec room, framing, drywall, LVP, pot lights. Easiest in newer Hespeler and East Cambridge builds.
Family Finish + Bath
$55K–$80K
Above plus 3-piece bathroom + one bedroom with egress. Common Preston bungalow scope.
Legal Cambridge Suite
$85K–$140K
Full kitchen, private entrance, permits. Galt/old Hespeler builds trend to the top; newer suburbs stay lower.

Bathrooms & Kitchens in Cambridge
Basements are the biggest thing we do in Cambridge, but plenty of Galt, Preston, and Hespeler homeowners add a bathroom or kitchen renovation to the same project. Same crew, same schedule.
Bathroom Renovations in Cambridge
Galt century homes have tiny original bathrooms — often 30 sq ft rooms carved from bedrooms in the 1890s. Most Galt bathroom renos involve knocking out an adjacent closet or wall to expand the footprint enough for a proper walk-in shower or double vanity. Preston 1950s–60s bungalows have small U-shape bathrooms with original pastel tile — typical gut-and-rebuild to porcelain and glass. Hespeler Village 2000+ builds usually just need cosmetic refreshes.
Pricing: $5K–$10K refresh in under a week. $15K–$35K+ full gut in 1–3 weeks. Older-home renovations trend to the top of the range because of plumbing rerouting and old lath-and-plaster repair.

Preston 1950s–60s bungalow kitchens are the most common Cambridge kitchen reno — tight galleys separated from small dining rooms by a load-bearing wall. Typical scope: engineered LVL beam across the opening, island where the wall was, quartz counters. Galt heritage kitchens need more careful heritage-appropriate cabinet styling. Hespeler Village and East Cambridge subdivisions are standard suburban kitchen updates.
Flooring, painting, drywall, framing, and general contracting across all three Cambridge districts too.
